Route Intelligence Report

New and Proposed Routes

Alaska Airlines (AS) will expand its winter schedule from San Jose, California (SJC) with the addition of seasonal service to Los Cabos (SJD) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR), while also restoring flights to Guadalajara (GDL) beginning in November. The move further strengthens Alaska’s position in Northern California, where the carrier has increasingly focused on Mexico leisure and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) markets. Guadalajara has long been one of the largest unserved international destinations from Silicon Valley when service is absent, reflecting the region’s substantial Mexican-American population.

Air Europa (UX) will launch three weekly Boeing 787-8 flights between Madrid (MAD) and San Salvador, El Salvador (SAL) on December 17. The new route becomes the carrier’s 21st destination in Latin America, further reinforcing the region’s importance to the Spanish airline. Air Europa has steadily expanded its long-haul network across Central and South America in recent years, leveraging Madrid’s role as Europe’s primary gateway to Latin America.

Dropped and Suspended Routes

Alaska Airlines continues to trim several seasonal leisure routes, including Los Angeles (LAX)-Cancun (CUN), Las Vegas (LAS)-Puerto Vallarta, Las Vegas-San Jose del Cabo, San Francisco (SFO)-Loreto, Mexico (LTO), Portland (PDX)-Cancun, and Portland-San Francisco. Most of the affected markets operated at relatively low frequencies and were heavily geared toward leisure demand. The latest reductions suggest Alaska is continuing to fine-tune its network following the Hawaiian Airlines acquisition, preferring to redeploy aircraft into stronger-performing markets rather than preserve marginal seasonal service.

Indonesia AirAsia (QZ) has removed two international routes from its reservation system, ending flights from Jakarta (CGK) to Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) and Singapore (SIN). The Bangkok service had operated three times daily, while Singapore was also served three times daily. The cuts come as Southeast Asian carriers continue to adjust capacity amid intense competition and fare pressure on some of the region’s busiest international routes.

Aviation Safety & Security

Close Call Being Investigated
A potentially serious runway conflict at Boston on June 20 is now under investigation by both the FAA and NTSB after a Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 operating Flight 2351 from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) was forced to execute a go-around when an American Airlines (AA) Boeing 737-800 departed from an intersecting runway. Flight tracking data reviewed by aviation analysts indicates the aircraft came within roughly 300 to 350 feet of one another, although the actual distance between the aircraft may have been even less. Delta said its crew received a traffic alert, coordinated with air traffic control, and conducted a standard go-around before landing safely. The incident occurred during simultaneous runway operations at Logan and has renewed scrutiny of runway incursion risks at major U.S. airports, particularly following several recent high-profile close calls nationwide. While no passengers were injured and both flights continued safely, the event was significant enough to prompt a formal NTSB investigation and was cited during a Senate aviation safety hearing this week as lawmakers continue examining vulnerabilities in the national airspace system.

For as little as 65¢ an issue, you’re missing: A transatlantic Aer Lingus (EI) flight that required every available flight attendant to restrain a violent passenger over Greenland, plus an onboard disturbance aboard an American Airlines (AA) flight that ended with police and emergency medical personnel meeting the aircraft on arrival.

Aviation Industry News

Airbus is facing renewed regulatory scrutiny after the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) ordered urgent inspections of 16 Airbus A380s following the discovery of cracks in wing mid-spar structures during maintenance inspections. The directive affects 15 Emirates (EK) aircraft and one Qantas (QF) aircraft, with five Emirates jets requiring inspection before further flight and the remaining aircraft requiring action within 25 flight cycles. Regulators said the cracks could potentially reduce wing structural integrity, prompting Airbus to issue additional inspection requirements while it evaluates whether repairs or further corrective actions will be necessary. The development revives memories of the A380’s well-publicized wing crack issues in 2012 and highlights the maintenance challenges facing the aging superjumbo fleet, which has been out of production since 2021.

Following its acquisition by Korean Air (KE), Asiana Airlines (OZ) will formally exit Star Alliance on December 31, 2026, ending more than two decades as a member of the world’s largest airline alliance. The departure is part of the broader integration of Asiana into Korean Air, which belongs to SkyTeam, and will gradually reshape codeshare agreements, frequent flyer partnerships, and alliance benefits across Northeast Asia. While travelers are unlikely to see major short-term disruptions, Star Alliance carriers will eventually lose access to Asiana’s Seoul Incheon-centered network, particularly on routes throughout South Korea and Asia. The move represents another major milestone in the Korean Air-Asiana merger, with the Asiana brand itself expected to disappear as operations are consolidated under Korean Air ahead of the planned full integration in 2027.

WestJet has repainted C-GORP, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, in this special livery to celebrate the airline’s partnership with Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays, who are playing their 50th season this year.

🇦🇺 Australian Aviation Review - May 2026

Australia's domestic airline industry continued to perform above long-term reliability averages in May, with on-time arrivals reaching 82.1 percent and departures 82.8 percent, while cancellations remained low at 1.5 percent. The Qantas network again outperformed Virgin Australia on punctuality metrics, while Hinterland Aviation led all reporting carriers. Jetstar remained the weakest-performing major airline. Overall, the data suggests Australia's domestic aviation system has largely stabilized following weather-related disruptions earlier in the year.

🔒 Paid subscribers receive: Full airline rankings, cancellation performance by carrier, the best and worst-performing routes in Australia, airport reliability rankings, and detailed analysis of which airlines gained and lost ground during May.

Was Doug Parker the executive who saved American Airlines or the one who left it vulnerable to the industry’s next competitive shift? This exclusive Flightline analysis examines Parker’s role in reshaping the U.S. airline industry through consolidation, the strategic decisions that built American’s strongest hubs, and the choices that may have contributed to its current challenges against Delta and United.
