Aviation Safety & Security

Alaska Airlines (AS) Flight 305 from Miami (MIA) to Seattle (SEA) returned to the gate Sunday evening after passengers allegedly threatened flight attendants, including a reported threat to “take the aircraft over.” The Boeing 737-800 had already pushed back when the crew stopped the departure, set the parking brake, shut down an engine and initiated a cockpit lockdown protocol while requesting law enforcement. The aircraft returned to Gate E6 about 18 minutes after pushback, where Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies deplaned passengers as a precaution. Authorities later said their investigation found no credible threat, and the two individuals involved were rebooked on another flight.

An Athens, Ga., father is facing the possibility of at least 15 years in a Jamaican prison after authorities discovered two loaded ammunition magazines in his backpack after he arrived for a family vacation. Igor Andrusceak said he accidentally left the magazines in the bag after a trip to a shooting range and acknowledges responsibility for failing to check it before traveling. But the ammunition also passed through TSA screening at Atlanta (ATL) without being detected, allowing him to board an international flight with it. Jamaican authorities discovered the magazines during screening for his return flight, leading to his arrest and detention. Andrusceak has since returned to Georgia but said he must return to Jamaica for court proceedings, where the country’s strict firearms laws could expose him to a lengthy prison sentence. TSA told 11Alive it was reviewing the incident and stressed that passengers are responsible for ensuring prohibited items are not in their carry-on baggage.

The captain of an Air India Airbus A320neo that encountered severe turbulence and suddenly dropped about 300 feet while operating from Phuket, Thailand (HKT) to Delhi (DEL) on Aug. 4 has reportedly tested positive for marijuana in a confirmatory drug test, following an earlier screening that detected psychoactive substances. The incident, involving flight AI2379 with 137 passengers and eight crew members, injured 13 passengers and four crew members before the aircraft landed safely in Delhi. Both pilots were removed from flying duties pending the investigation, while India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation has summoned Air India CEO Campbell Wilson and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is investigating the event. Authorities are also examining whether stricter drug-testing requirements for aviation personnel are warranted.

Aviation Industry News

Embraer reported record second-quarter revenue of $2.2 billion, up 23 percent year over year, as higher aircraft deliveries and growth across its businesses boosted results. Adjusted net income rose to $218.6 million from $158 million, while adjusted EBIT reached $296.9 million for a 13.3 percent margin. Defense & Security led growth with revenue up 38 percent, followed by Executive Aviation at 32 percent, Services & Support at 24 percent and Commercial Aviation at eight percent. Embraer delivered 65 aircraft during the quarter, its best second-quarter performance in 16 years, while first-half deliveries increased about 20 percent to 109 aircraft. Its backlog reached a record $34.5 billion, up 16 percent. The stronger performance prompted Embraer to raise its 2026 adjusted EBIT margin guidance to 10 percent to 10.6 percent and double its expected adjusted free cash flow excluding Eve to at least $400 million.

Air France (AF) will keep the Airbus A318 in service until at least early November, according to recent schedule updates.

I’m afraid I have bad news for our readers in France who may have been waiting for their new Peugeot 208 to be delivered. A massive fire destroyed dozens of vehicles Tuesday afternoon at a secured parking facility used by travelers near Paris de Gaulle Airport (CDG). The blaze began around 3 p.m. in Louvres, roughly 10 kilometers from the airport’s runways, producing a large plume of black smoke visible from as far away as central Paris. Around 80 firefighters responded, while two runways were temporarily closed as a precaution because of the fire and smoke, although airport operations continued. Nearby train and bus services were also disrupted. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet confirmed the final number of vehicles destroyed or whether anyone was injured.

DHL Express has completed a €177 million expansion of its “Super Gateway” at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX), tripling processing capacity to 900 tonnes per day in the company’s largest investment in mainland China to date. The expanded facility, serving the major manufacturing and export region of southern China, is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs while supporting growing e-commerce and cross-border express traffic. DHL has also launched a daily Boeing 767 freighter circuit linking Shanghai (PVG), Bangkok (BKK), Bahrain (BAH) and Brussels before returning to Shanghai, adding up to 50 tonnes of daily capacity between China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. The additional lift is aimed particularly at heavier shipments from technology, semiconductor, industrial manufacturing and data-center customers.
