SAHSA: Honduras’ Flag Carrier

From Douglas props to Boeing jets | 1945 to 1994

SAHSA (SH), short for Servicio Aéreo de Honduras, was Honduras’ flag carrier for nearly half a century. Established in 1945 with backing from Pan American Airways, the Honduran government and private investors, it began flying that October with a Douglas DC-2. The early job was connecting communities within Honduras, with Tegucigalpa’s Toncontín Airport (TGU) at the heart of the operation. DC-3s and Curtiss C-46s followed, then larger piston aircraft and Lockheed Electra turboprops. Boeing 737-200s and 727-200s eventually took the airline into the jet age, carrying its blue-and-white colors beyond Central America to the United States.

SAHSA’s story became closely tied to fellow Honduran carrier Transportes Aéreos Nacionales, better known as TAN. The two names appeared together as TAN-SAHSA before the operation returned to the SAHSA name in its final years. Its network grew from domestic links into international services, with San Pedro Sula (SAP) another important base. The ending was less happy: financial difficulties and a troubled safety record overshadowed the airline’s later years, and SAHSA closed in January 1994. The name disappeared from timetables, but the blue tail, Honduran stars and bright green fuselage stripe remain an unmistakable piece of the country’s aviation history.

The purchase was part of a 250-aircraft package that also included 75 Airbus A320neo-family jets and 35 A330neos, plus options for another 100 Airbus aircraft. Pricing and delivery dates for Avolon’s Boeing order have not been disclosed. Lufthansa Group signed an agreement on November 3 to buy 44.9 percent of TAP Air Portugal (TP) for €1.03 billion. Its stake could reach 49.9 percent through the purchase of shares offered to employees, bringing the total cost, including a closing-related fee, to as much as €1.2 billion. Lisbon (LIS) would become the group’s seventh hub, with growth focused on Brazil, Portuguese-speaking Africa and North America. Closing remains subject to regulatory approvals.

Aviation Safety & Security
