Aviation Safety & Security
Flydubai (FZ) flight FZ1073 from Dubai (DXB) to Tel Aviv (TLV), operated by Boeing 737 MAX 8 (A6-FKF), diverted to Tabuk (TUU), Saudi Arabia, on September 30 after an altercation in the cockpit. The airline now says other on-duty flydubai crew traveling aboard secured the aircraft and landed it safely. Airport operator Cluster2 Airports said both operating pilots sustained injuries and were hospitalized, while the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority described the event as a security incident that was brought under control. Passengers subsequently continued to Israel aboard a replacement aircraft. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed the other and apparently attempted to crash the aircraft before passengers and crew intervened; that allegation remains distinct from the more limited details confirmed by the airline and aviation authorities. Flydubai has suspended flights to and from Israel while the investigation continues.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Flydubai became the first airline to launch scheduled commercial flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv in 2020, following the normalization of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. The airline was operating up to 10 daily flights between the two cities at the time of this incident.

Aviation Industry News
The Boeing 737-700 is beginning to disappear from WestJet’s (WS) fleet. The airline and FTAI Aviation announced a 27-aircraft transaction September 28 covering much of WestJet’s remaining -700 fleet. Seventeen aircraft are being sold to FTAI and leased back, meaning they will continue flying for WestJet for the time being. Another 10 aircraft coming off lease are headed to FTAI’s Aerospace Products business, where their CFM56-7B engines and other components can be used to support other operators. WestJet said back in June that high fuel prices were speeding up plans to retire its oldest 737-700s. FTAI calls the deal one of the largest aircraft transactions it has completed.

The final pieces of Spirit Airlines (NK) continue to be sold off. A bankruptcy court has approved the sale of 27 Airbus A320-family aircraft for about $668 million, according to AirlineGeeks, citing Bloomberg. An entity controlled by Spirit bondholders will take 23 aircraft, while an FTAI Aviation affiliate will acquire the remaining four. It is one of the biggest pieces left from Spirit’s former operation and includes some of the airline’s most valuable remaining assets. Spirit stopped flying in May and is now liquidating aircraft, equipment, gates, real estate and whatever else remains. About 100 employees are still overseeing the wind-down. The airline’s Dania Beach, Fla., headquarters sold for $93 million in August.
The relatively new Terminal A at Newark, N.J. (EWR) is already getting bigger. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has authorized $110 million to move forward with an eight-gate expansion that would take the terminal from 33 gates to 41. The first $100 million covers design and construction of two gates on the south side, with work expected to begin in 2027 and opening targeted for 2029. Another $10 million will fund planning for six gates on the north side, which could open in phases between 2030 and 2032 if additional approvals and funding come through. Terminal A handled about 18 million passengers in 2024, already well above its original design capacity of roughly 13 million to 14 million annually.
🥃 Travelers bringing Canadian alcohol into the U.S. face new restrictions after an import ban took effect September 29, 2026. The measure covers specified Canadian-made alcoholic beverages, including bottled whisky and many other spirits, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) directing that covered products be denied entry. Prohibited imports can be seized, although confiscations from travelers under the new ban have not been independently verified. The published guidance provides no explicit personal-use exemption, so travelers should not assume the usual duty-free alcohol allowance applies.

Police Blotter
A Utah woman was sentenced September 28 to 13 months in federal prison and two years of supervised release for her role in baggage thefts at Salt Lake City (SLC). Leticia Marie Torres, 45, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting baggage theft and illegal transactions using stolen payment cards. Prosecutors said Torres and an accomplice stole travelers’ luggage in 2022 and used a victim’s credit cards, with losses totaling $36,599.54. Investigators also found stolen luggage at her home. Torres was the final defendant sentenced in the related cases, and the court held the three defendants jointly responsible for repaying the losses.
