Aviation Safety & Security

CATSA screeners at Canada’s 17 largest airports processed 5,856,876 passengers in June, an increase of 0.8 percent compared with the same month last year. During the first six months of 2026, those airports screened 31,791,491 passengers, up nearly 3 percent compared with the first half of 2025.

The Dominican Republic has expanded airport security with the deployment of 18 new K-9 teams trained to detect explosives and narcotics at airports across the country. The canine units, operated by the Specialized Airport and Civil Aviation Security Corps (CESAC), are part of a broader effort to strengthen aviation security as passenger traffic and tourism continue to grow. The initiative builds on the country’s investment in modern canine training programs and aligns with international best practices promoted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for airport security screening and threat detection.

Aviation Industry News

The Norwegian Group carried 2.8 million passengers in June 2026, with Norwegian (DY) transporting 2.4 million passengers and regional subsidiary Widerøe (WF) carrying a record 404,000 passengers, marking the first month in the airline’s history to surpass the 400,000-passenger milestone.

Norwegian increased capacity by eight percent year over year and reported a systemwide load factor of 83.6 percent, down 4.8 percentage points as the carrier ramped up flying for the summer season and launched several new routes. The airline operated an average of 93 Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft during the month.

Widerøe also expanded, increasing capacity by seven percent while posting a 78.1 percent systemwide load factor, down 3.1 percentage points from June 2025. Despite the lower load factor, the regional carrier set a new monthly passenger record as demand across its domestic and regional network continued to grow.

A federal judge has allowed a lawsuit against JetBlue Airways (B6) to move forward over the airline’s handling of TSA security fees on canceled award tickets. The plaintiffs allege JetBlue improperly retains the $5.60 September 11 Security Fee as a travel credit rather than issuing the cash refund required under federal regulations when a passenger does not travel.

JetBlue argued the claims were barred under the Airline Deregulation Act, but the court found passengers could pursue a breach-of-contract claim because the airline’s own contract of carriage promises to refund taxes and fees when required by law. The case has not been certified as a class action, meaning it currently proceeds only on behalf of the individual plaintiffs, though it could have broader implications for how airlines handle refundable government-imposed security fees on unused tickets.

Boeing’s electronically dimmable windows on the 787 have become one of the manufacturer’s most frequently replaced spare parts, according to aircraft maintenance engineers, as passengers often repeatedly press the window control button after assuming it is not working. The electrochromic windows can take up to 60 seconds, and as long as 100 seconds on older aircraft, to fully darken, leading many travelers to press the switch multiple times and accelerate wear. Airlines reportedly spend tens of thousands of dollars each year replacing the buttons. While the technology eliminated traditional window shades and introduced larger cabin windows, it has drawn criticism for its slow response and limited ability to block sunlight. Airbus initially rejected the concept for the A350 but later adopted an improved version of the technology that darkens faster, blocks significantly more visible light, and uses touch-sensitive controls rather than mechanical switches. Boeing is expected to introduce a next-generation dimmable window system on the much-delayed 777X.

🍺 British Airways (BA) is investigating after Flight BA254 from Bridgetown, Barbados, to London Heathrow (LHR) was canceled Sunday when several cabin crew members allegedly became heavily intoxicated during a layover at an all-inclusive resort, leaving them unfit to operate the return flight. Reports say the group had been drinking late into the night, with one flight attendant reportedly vomiting in the hotel bar and another collapsing and requiring assistance back to his room. Four crew members have since been suspended pending the airline’s investigation.

The Boeing 777-236/ER (G-VIIA) ultimately returned to London empty so it could resume its scheduled operations, while passengers were left stranded in Barbados. Because the cancellation was within the airline’s control, affected travelers may be entitled to compensation of up to £520 (about $700) per passenger under UK261 regulations, in addition to hotel accommodations, meals, and rebooking assistance. With a full flight, total compensation could exceed $165,000. British Airways said it “expects the highest standards of our crew” and is urgently investigating the incident.
