New and Proposed Routes
American Airlines (AA) will add seven daily international routes for summer 2027. Tickets go on sale Aug. 31. The schedule is as follows:
Charlotte, N.C. (CLT)-Barcelona, Spain (BCN): Daily beginning May 27 with the Boeing 777-200ER.
Chicago O’Hare (ORD)-Tokyo Narita (NRT): Daily beginning March 19 with the Boeing 787-9. The service is timed to capture demand during Japan’s cherry blossom season and will offer onward connections through Japan Airlines.
New York Kennedy (JFK)-Amsterdam (AMS): Daily beginning March 28 with the Airbus A321XLR. The route will complement American’s seasonal Dallas/Fort Worth-Amsterdam service and year-round Philadelphia-Amsterdam flights.
New York Kennedy-Nice, France (NCE): Daily beginning May 6 with the Airbus A321XLR.
Philadelphia (PHL)-Porto, Portugal (OPO): Daily beginning March 28 with the Airbus A321XLR. Porto will be a new destination in American’s network.
Philadelphia-Reykjavik Keflavik (KEF): Daily beginning May 27 with the Airbus A321neo. The route will mark American’s return to Iceland for the first time since 2019.
Philadelphia-Vienna (VIE): Daily beginning May 6 with the Airbus A321XLR. Service will operate through early January 2028, and American will be the only U.S. airline serving Vienna.
Syrian Airlines (RB) is resuming service from Damascus (DAM) to Copenhagen (CPH) and Vienna. Copenhagen flights will operate weekly using an Airbus A320, although a launch date has not yet been specified. 2x weekly Airbus A320 service to Vienna will resume on September 22, 2026.
Volaris (Y4) intends to launch service from Guadalajara (GDL) to seven new U.S. destinations: Austin, Texas (AUS); Boston (BOS); Minneapolis, Minn. (MSP); Nashville, Tenn. (BNA); Philadelphia; Raleigh, N.C. (RDU); and Tampa, Fla. (TPA). The proposed routes remain subject to government approval, with launch dates, frequencies and aircraft details yet to be announced.
Dropped and Suspended Routes
Fiji Airways (FJ) will discontinue service between Nadi (NAN) and Canberra, Australia (CBR) after January 31, 2027. The Oneworld member currently operates the route 2x weekly using a Boeing 737 MAX 8.
Scandinavian (SK) has removed its planned Copenhagen to Dubai Al Maktoum (DWC) service from its schedule. The SkyTeam member had planned to begin daily Airbus A320neo flights on October 25, 2026, marking its return to Dubai for the first time since 2011.
Finnair (AY) has canceled its planned winter service between Helsinki (HEL) and Dubai (DXB). The airline had scheduled daily flights from October 25, 2026, through March 27, 2027.

LATEST AIRCRAFT RETIREMENTS
🇺🇸 N478UA, an Airbus A320-232 with United Airlines, was withdrawn from use (wfu) and ferried on Aug. 27 to Victorville, Calif. (VCV) for part-out and scrap. This aircraft was delivered new to United in August 2001 and later spent several years flying for Ted, United’s short-lived in-house low-cost carrier, from 2004 to 2009. It had accumulated 68,794 hours and 30,169 cycles as of April 22, 2026..

Two baggage handlers at Frankfurt have died and four others remain under medical care after contracting malaria, reportedly from an infected mosquito believed to have arrived in the cargo hold of an aircraft from sub-Saharan Africa. The workers are thought to have been infected in late June before developing symptoms in early July. Airport operator Fraport said there is no evidence of a wider outbreak, but ground employees have been advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience flu-like symptoms. Mosquito traps have been installed at the airport, with captured specimens sent to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp for analysis.

Thousands of TSA, CBP, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees working at airports will not receive a cost-of-living adjustment in 2027, along with other federal employees. The decision follows the president’s submission of an alternative pay plan on August 27. It comes after a 43-day government-wide shutdown in late 2025 and a 75-day Department of Homeland Security shutdown in early 2026, separated by just over three months. During the funding lapses, many airport employees were required to continue working for six weeks without receiving their regular pay. New federal performance rules could also dramatically reduce bonus eligibility across the vast majority of the workforce by limiting top ratings. Federal employees received a one percent COLA adjustment in 2026, while inflation reached 2.7 percent in 2025 and stood at 3.4 percent as of July 2026. Employees have also faced rising healthcare costs, with premiums increasing 13.5 percent in 2025 and 12.3 percent in 2026. Another increase of more than 10 percent is expected in 2027. The president’s letter to the Speaker of the House states that “this decision will maintain fiscal responsibility without harming the Government’s ability to recruit and retain well qualified employees.”
Aviation Industry News
Qantas Airways (QF) will begin retiring its 10 Airbus A380s in 2028, approximately four years earlier than previously planned, as it accelerates the renewal of its long-haul fleet. The airline is considering converting around 20 existing options into firm orders for additional Airbus A350-1000s and Boeing 787s, which would replace A380 capacity alongside widebodies already on order. Qantas says the newer twin-engine aircraft will be able to operate every route in its existing international network while providing opportunities to launch additional long-distance services.
American Airlines will launch a new cabin improvement program called OneCabin on September 14 as it works to address broken seats, malfunctioning entertainment screens, damaged tray tables and other interior issues across its fleet. The carrier plans to deploy more than 60 additional maintenance technicians in dedicated teams at Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), Philadelphia and Phoenix (PHX). The initiative is intended to accelerate cabin repairs and improve the cleanliness, appearance and functionality of American’s aircraft following passenger complaints about inoperative equipment and temporary tape repairs.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Nashville Airport have announced their intent to rename the airport in honor of Dolly Parton, who died August 25 at age 80. Lee said he discussed the proposal with representatives for Parton, who expressed appreciation and remain open to the idea. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is expected to consider the proposal at its September 17 meeting, including whether to waive or revise an existing policy requiring someone to have been deceased for at least two years before an airport property can bear that person’s name. If approved, Parton would become the first woman individually honored in the name of one of the 50 busiest U.S. airports.
