Aviation Safety & Security
The U.S. Department of Transportation fined Air France (AF) $105,000 and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) $320,000 for operating flights carrying Delta Air Lines’ code through FAA-prohibited airspace in the Baghdad Flight Information Region. Investigators identified more than 30 Air France flights between April 2022 and November 2025 and more than 100 KLM flights between January 2022 and May 2025. Foreign airlines carrying a U.S. airline’s code must follow applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airspace restrictions. Both carriers were ordered to cease further violations.
Ukrainian drone attacks are increasingly disrupting Moscow’s airports, with Domodedovo (DME), Sheremetyevo, Zhukovsky (ZIA) and Vnukovo (VKO) suspending operations almost daily in October. Some closures reportedly lasted up to nine hours. Russia’s emergency airspace restrictions halt civilian flights when military threats or unidentified objects are detected. The disruptions follow Ukraine’s September warning to airlines and insurers that Russian airspace would become unsafe, although a sustained shutdown has not been achieved.
Aviation Industry News
Southwest Airlines cut its 2026 adjusted earnings outlook to $2.60 to $2.85 per share as rising fuel prices offset strong demand and record revenue. The carrier expects fourth-quarter fuel costs of about $4.55 per gallon, up from $3.92 in the third quarter. Southwest reported record quarterly operating revenue of $8.4 billion, net income of $270 million compared with $54 million a year earlier, and a 21.6 percent increase in unit revenue.

American Airlines’ most senior active flight attendant, Carol Fair, plans to retire at 83 after 63½ years (!) in the industry, according to Forbes. Fair joined Piedmont Airlines in 1963 and worked its inaugural Charlotte (CLT) to London Gatwick (LGW) flight on June 15, 1987. Her final trip is scheduled aboard American Flight 733 from London Heathrow (LHR) to Charlotte today, with a water salute expected to mark her retirement. Her career spans the transition from Douglas DC-3s to wide-body Boeing jets, and she has been recognized by aviation halls of fame in North Carolina and Tennessee. Fair recalled that American initially rejected her application, telling her she was not “American material.”

Allegiant Air (G4) converted six Boeing 737 MAX 8 options into firm orders for delivery in 2028, increasing its firm commitment under the purchase agreement to 56 aircraft. Of those, 22 had been delivered as of Oct. 23, leaving 34 outstanding, alongside 74 remaining options. The six additional aircraft carry a combined list price exceeding $720 million before discounts and delivery-related adjustments. The agreement follows Allegiant’s acquisition of Sun Country, whose fleet remains operationally separate pending a single FAA operating certificate.

Air Cargo
Airbus forecasts the global dedicated freighter fleet will grow 46 percent, from 2,360 aircraft in 2026 to 3,460 by 2045, driven by rising cargo demand and fleet renewal. Its latest Cargo Global Market Forecast projects 2,670 deliveries, including 1,580 replacement aircraft and 1,090 for growth, with passenger-to-freighter conversions supplying 1,700 aircraft and new-build freighters accounting for 970. North America and Asia-Pacific will represent roughly two-thirds of demand. Airbus expects air cargo traffic to grow 3.2 percent annually, supported by e-commerce, high-value technology shipments and demand for alternatives to maritime transport.
