Route Intelligence Report

New and Proposed Routes

United Airlines (UA) has added a handful of round-trip runs between Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Las Vegas (LAS) in support of the 2027 Consumer Electronics Show: Boeing 777-200 arrivals to Las Vegas on January 3, 4, and 5, with Boeing 787-9 returns on January 9, 10, and 11.

ITA Airways (AZ) will launch service between Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Caracas (CCS) on March 30, 2027. Flights will operate 2x times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays using Airbus A330-900 aircraft.

Dropped and Suspended Routes

Delta Air Lines (DL) has delayed the launch of its new service from Atlanta (ATL) to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (RUH) until late March. The move comes after a recent Houthi attack on the airport killed a dozen and wounded another 300; the route had also been plagued by horrendous early booking figures.

Trinity Airways (TW), formerly T’way Air, will suspend Seoul Incheon (ICN) to Frankfurt (FRA) for winter 2026/27. The route remained unavailable for booking during the winter season as of October 13.

How Jennifer Aniston’s LolaVie brand grew sales 40% with CTV ads

Aviation Safety & Security

UPDATE: Israel has reportedly instructed foreign airlines to exclude pilots and flight attendants who hold citizenship, including dual citizenship, from specified countries without diplomatic relations with Israel from flights to Tel Aviv, even if they also hold a valid U.S. passport. The restrictions follow a thwarted Sept. 30 attack in which a Flydubai (FZ) first officer allegedly tried to incapacitate the captain and crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion Airport’s main terminal. United Airlines has reportedly notified crews of the restrictions, which apply regardless of their current ties to the affected country.

On Monday, an Ethiopian Airlines (ET) Boeing 737 cargo flight bound for Tel Aviv returned to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ADD), after Israeli authorities identified an Indonesian pilot aboard. The crew manifest was reportedly submitted only after departure. Flight ET3414 landed back at its origin one hour 42 minutes after takeoff, then departed again following a crew change and completed the journey to Tel Aviv.

Aviation Industry News

GOL (G3) will temporarily pull out of Florida and cut other international and domestic routes beginning in February 2027 as higher fuel bills squeeze margins. Brasília (BSB) and Fortaleza (FOR) will lose Orlando service, while Brasília and Belém (BEL) will lose Miami (MIA) flights. Services to Montevideo (MVD), Asunción (ASU) and Punta Cana (PUJ) are also being cut, along with several domestic routes. Petrobras raised jet fuel prices an average of 11.8 percent on October 1, bringing the increase since March to 74 percent. GOL says fuel now accounts for nearly 40 percent of its operating costs. New York Kennedy will remain its only U.S. destination, served from Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão airport (GIG) with a Wamos Air (EB) Airbus A330-200. The airline has also reopened voluntary unpaid leave for flight crews. Affected passengers will be offered alternative flights or full refunds.

United Airlines will drop the option to qualify for elite status through a combination of flights and lower spending in 2027. Travelers will need 6,000 Premier Qualifying Points for Silver, 12,000 for Gold, 18,000 for Platinum or 32,000 for Premier 1K, plus at least four United or United Express flights. Those requirements cover activity in 2027 toward 2028 status. For someone earning 1K with 60 flights and 22,000 points, that means a 45.5 percent increase in the points required. Those already using the points-only option face a 14.3 percent increase. Annual qualifying-point head starts will require an eligible United credit card, too. PlusPoints upgrades move to dynamic pricing in February 2027, so travelers will lose the certainty of a fixed redemption chart.

EDITOR’S NOTE: I’ve written before about why I don’t see much point in chasing airline status or miles. This is another reason. You spend toward one set of requirements, then the airline raises the bar. Miles can lose value just as easily, even after you’ve paid to buy them.
