Screeners at U.S. airports processed 76,792,367 passengers in August, down 4.4 percent from August 2025. During the first eight months of the year, passenger screenings declined 0.5 percent from the same period in 2025, totaling 602,528,975.

TSA has launched Gateside by TSA PreCheck, a pilot program that restores a limited version of the gate access common before Sept. 11, 2001. It allows approved people without airline tickets to enter secure terminal areas to accompany departing travelers, greet arriving passengers, visit someone during a layover, or use airport restaurants and shops. The initial rollout covers 13 airports: Columbus (CMH), Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit (DTW), Indianapolis (IND), Las Vegas, Little Rock, Ark. (LIT), Los Angeles (LAX), Oklahoma City (OKC), Omaha (OMA), Phoenix Mesa (AZA), Salt Lake City (SLC), San Diego and Wichita, Kan. (ICT). TSA says additional airports are expected to join later.

Gateside is not a return to unrestricted public access. Adult applicants must have TSA PreCheck benefits or another eligible Known Traveler Number and request a free, single-day pass through TSA’s online portal one to three days before the visit. Children may accompany an eligible parent or guardian but must be included in the application. Approval is not guaranteed because airports can limit passes during busy periods. Approved visitors must present acceptable identification, use a TSA PreCheck lane and undergo security screening while following the same carry-on restrictions and conduct rules as ticketed passengers. The pass provides terminal access only and cannot be used to board a flight or enter customs and immigration areas. Gateside also differs from existing airline or airport visitor passes, which may be available to people assisting unaccompanied minors, older travelers or passengers with disabilities and generally do not require TSA PreCheck membership.

Southwest Airlines (WN) will launch its first airport-lounge network in partnership with Chase, with initial locations at Austin (AUS), Baltimore, Honolulu (HNL) and Nashville (BNA). Construction has begun, and the first lounges are expected to welcome travelers in late 2027. Southwest plans at least seven additional locations over the following several years. The lounges will feature locally inspired food, work and relaxation areas, and other amenities associated with the Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge network. Access will be included with a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card scheduled to launch in 2027, although the airline has not yet disclosed other access options.

American Airlines will end First Class service in the coming months, with the Fort Worth-based carrier set to stop selling first class on its Boeing 777-300/ERs by November 19. Premium trans-continental routes will see the end of “Flagship First” by late March 2027.

SpiceJet (SG) has suspended all Boeing 737 MAX 8 passenger operations as its financial crisis, fleet groundings and disputes with aircraft lessors continue to reduce available capacity. The airline said the decision was driven by financial and leasing constraints rather than a new technical or safety problem involving the aircraft. Flight records indicate that SpiceJet’s three remaining active 737 MAX 8s stopped operating on August 19 and 20. Lessors have pursued the de-registration and repossession of several aircraft over unpaid obligations, while removing the remaining MAX jets from service allows SpiceJet to reduce continuing lease expenses on aircraft that are no longer generating revenue.

At least five people were killed and five others injured Sunday when an Amazon Air cargo aircraft operated by 21 Air (2I) overran a runway at Miami (MIA), crossed the airport perimeter and struck several vehicles before catching fire. Three of the injured were taken to a trauma center in critical condition, while two others were hospitalized with less severe injuries. Authorities had not identified the victims or confirmed whether all five fatalities were occupants of vehicles struck by the aircraft as of Sunday evening.

21 Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 freighter registered N1997A, was arriving from San Juan, P.R. (SJU). The FAA said the aircraft overran the runway after landing at about 2 p.m. local time. More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene, where crews extinguished heavy flames, rescued the pilots from the cockpit and worked to control an active fuel leak. The accident halted flights at MIA for much of the afternoon before limited operations resumed.

The cause of the overrun remained unknown Sunday night, and officials cautioned that the casualty count and other details could change as the response continued. The FAA opened an investigation, while Amazon said it was working with local authorities, supporting those affected and would cooperate fully with investigators. The accident involves a contractor-operated aircraft in Amazon’s cargo network, rather than an airline operated directly by Amazon.
